A ban on plastic carrier bags in Headingley?…

By Lindsey • Feb 18th, 2009 • Category: Lead story

In an increasingly environmentally conscious society, major retailers such as Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s are now encouraging shoppers to use so called ‘bio-bags’ as oppose to the traditional plastic carrier bags.

Last year a group of campaigners in Hebden Bridge were thinking along the same lines and over the past few months they have been working hard to make their local area a plastic bag-free zone. They have encouraged local shops to stop using plastic carrier bags or alternatively switch to corn starch or organic ones which are more environmentally friendly.

Our local councillors and universities/student unions are keen for the shops in Headingley to do the same. The Natural Food Store are already selling fab eco-bags in either red or green. They feature the slogan ‘Think Global, Shop Local’ and can be bought at either the Natural Food Store or the Farmers market for £5.

Do you think Headingley should become a plastic bag-free zone?
