Funds ensure Headingley is not left in the dark this Christmas!

Businesses in Headingley have got in to the Christmas spirit early this year and helped ensure the area will be decked out with Christmas lights.

A number of local companies have pledged money to contribute to the cost of Christmas lights this year.

Funding has also come from the Council’s Inner Northwest Area Committee, which covers Hyde Park, Headingley, Weetwood and Kirkstall.

Last year, the Council announced its decision not to fund any Christmas lights outside Leeds City Centre and Headingley almost went without decorations, but at the last minute, the local business community stepped up to raise £2,000 in just four days. The money was enough to deck out the junction of North Lane and Otley Road.

Councillors Neil Walshaw and Janette Walker (Labour, Headingley) said they were thrilled with the latest news about the lights.

Councillor Walshaw told the YEP: ”Lights bring a bit of Christmas cheer after what has been quite a difficult economic year for the area. It’s really great that we are bale to put on a show of Christmas lights in Headingley.” He added: ”I would like to thank local businesses that have already contributed and my colleagues on the area committee.”
